The Torre Trappola Estate view villa details
|
| |
The Torre Trappola Estate is a rare example of a
privately owned estate extending within the confines
of a WWF National Park on the coast of the Maremma
in Tuscany. |
The Maremma is the other face of
Tuscany - a wild region stretching along
the Tyrrhenian coastline opposite the island of
Elba between Leghorn and
Grosseto. Unspoilt beaches fringed with dunes are
backed by hillsides
covered in Mediterranean scrub and olive groves,
crested by charming
hill-top villages. The reclaimed flatlands where
cattle used to roam herded
by the local cowboys have today largely been given
over to well-husbanded
vineyards yielding some of the most prestigious
vintages in Italy. |
Where
there is great wine there tends to be great food
and the Gambero Rosso,
voted the best restaurant in Italy, is in one of
the seaside resorts along
the coast. The area is also famous for the incredibly
beautiful Maremma
National Park and the Trappola estate is part of this park. Important sight-seeing cities like
Siena, Pisa, Lucca and
Florence are within easy reach for stimulating day
trips from Torre Trappola.
The olive
trees on the Trappola estate are a rare species of wild
olives, locally known as olivastri. A morning
can be pleasantly spent touring the Trappola lands in
a horse carriage culminating in a lunch served
under these biblical olivastri. |

The property of Torre Trappola which covers 560 hectares was incorporated
in the National Park with the aim of keeping traditional
farming techniques alive. All produce is organically
grown, the local cattle with their lyre-shaped
horns and the indigenous Maremma horses are raised
free. Vast sections of the Trappola estate are wild and
serve as a natural habitat to an extensive variety
of animals who can be observed grazing and nesting
undisturbed. For bird-watchers this is rated among
the top ten ideal viewing points in Italy.
A delightful walk from Torre
Trappola leads to the ruins of the church of
San Rabano within the borders of the National Park
.

| The owners of the Trappola estate are brother
and sister Ranieri and Marina Pisaneschi who inherited
this very special farm in 2004. While Ranieri is
pursuing an international career, Marina - young,
energetic and a mother of two - has taken over
the management of the Trappola family estate. Her prime objective is to find innovative
ways to keep the estate alive. One of the first
steps was a complete renovation of the main house, the original Torre (tower) Trappola.
Marina would like to open the gates of the estate
to guests seeking one of Europe's rarest luxuries
- nature preservation, wild life and empty beaches.
Further options while staying at La Trappola are
carriage drives and trekking on horseback through
the estate with ample opportunities for bird-watching
and observing the herds of cattle and horses. |

Riders can canter along the
breakwater on the sandy beaches to be rewarded
by an al fresco lunch in the "Bosco dell'Olivastra",
a magical grove of olive trees. The property of
Torre Trappola extends along the coast and guests
are privileged in that they have access to a private
beach at only a four km drive through the Trappola
estate.

The main villa, Villa Trappola, dates back to 1283
when it was a 30 metre tower built to defend the
coastline from the raids of the Saracens. The
villa Trappola was fully restored by 2005. The
landscape fluctuates between hillsides smothered
in thick pine, marshland populated by acquatic
birds, deep white beaches fringed by dunes, seven
ancient towers, one of which is the Torre Trappola,
built by the Republic of Siena to guard the coast
from the raids of Saracen pirates.
The Maremma National
Park extends over 10.000 hectares along the
coast. The Park has many signposted tracks affording
views of herds of the lyre-horned cattle of
the Maremma still rounded up by the local cowboys
known as "butteri" and the indigenous
horses of Maremma in the wild. |

Sightseeing:
Grosseto is 12 kms away, Siena is at 80 kms,
Florence at 160 kms, Pisa at 165, while Rome is 180
kms away
Siena: at one hour's drive from Torre
Trappola, this is one of the most enchanting towns in
Tuscany fanning out around a shell-shaped main square
called Il Campo where the historic horse race known
as Il Palio is held twice a year. The narrow streets
are lined with old-fashioned boutiques and little cafes,
while the churches and museums are a treasure trove
of fourteenth century art.
Trendy beach resorts:
you will find the jet-set holiday resorts of Porto Santo
Stefano and Porto Ercole at only a 45minutes drive from
the Trappola estate. A visit to the daily fish market
in the picturesque harbour of Castiglione della Pescaia
featuring the day's catch straight from the fishing
boats is highly recommended. (30 minutes from Trappola)
The WWF Maremma National Park:
The Park encompasses seven towers, the remains of an
abbey and twenty six grottoes. In summer the National
Park can only be visited accompanied by a guide. Visits
by night from 8 to 11 pm are a special thrill.
The islands:
boats leave daily for the islands of Giglio and Giannutri
from the nearby fishing village of Castiglione della
Pescaia. Giglio is a charming unspoilt island with a
village dominated by a castle dating back to the time
of the Aragons and many secluded bays and creeks. Giannutri
is not unlike some of the less exploited Greek islands
and is a favourite haunt of deep sea divers as they
say a sunken Roman galleon is buried in its depths.
The spa of Saturnia: Saturnia, an hour's
drive away, is the most spectacular natural hot water
spring and spa in Tuscany with a luxury spa hotel as
well as pale blue waterfalls of hot water cascading
down the hillside in the open countryside.
Transport: The
Pisa Airport is 165 kms (2 hours) away, while the Florence
Airport is only 5 kms less. The Grosseto train station
is well connected for trips to Rome (1,45 hours) and
Pisa (1,5 hours).
